Winter Clothing. As the snow finally begins to melt and temperatures climb, it’s getting to be the time when we pull out our T-shirts and shorts and put our winter clothes into storage. While it is tempting to just toss everything into a box and stuff it in the back of the closet, consider taking a little extra time to store your clothes properly. It will keep them from getting damaged in the long summer months, and you will be glad you did when you unpack them in November.
1. Wash Before Packing
Do a couple of loads of laundry before you start packing. Stains settle if left along for several months, not to mention the fact that insects may want to follow the food crumbs. If you have specialty items that need to be laundered by someone else, go ahead and get that taken care of. Finding a place that does fur coat storage and cleaning is much better than finding a family of bugs in it next winter.
2. Don’t Use Cardboard
Cardboard boxes attract bugs, so they shouldn’t be used for anything more than temporary storage. Plastic containers are all right, as long as you thoroughly clean them out, but the best option is a clean, unused suitcase, lined with tissue.
3. Remember Dark, Dry, Cool and Clean
The ideal storage space will meet all of those criteria. Darkness keeps your clothes from fading, dryness keeps away bugs and mildew, coolness means no heat damage, and, well, it probably could go without saying that you want your storage space to be clean.
So if you are like me and you have some lovely pieces that you’ve invested in, then it is wise to take a few hours out of your time to preserve your beautiful winter clothing to ensure it will last for many years to come!

It’s the eternal problem – where to put it all. We’ve got spacebags that are great, if you can only remember to vacuum them every time they’ve been opened… :o) Xx

Wonderful tips, as of now I store them in my wardrobe. My wardrobe isn´t the biggest collection, have lots of room for all my clothes 🙂
I’ve always lived in small spaces so there was never enough room…still waiting for that perfect walk-in closet!

Your timing is perfect as I was just unpacking winter clothes to sort and chuck what hasn’t been worn last year, and then I came across your brilliant post. I will certainly take your advice as it’s still a few months before we settle into the winter woollies!
