Photography for bloggers outfit photos. Okay, so now we’ve covered some photography basics, some composition tips and how to take the best photos outdoors. Before we talk about the best way of taking your pics inside and start tackling some of the technical aspects of photography like which lenses to use, focal points and ISO, there have been some requests for how to take great outfit pics. There are some who have mastered this, but many others are still struggling.

PHOTOGRAPHY FOR BLOGGERS OUTFIT PHOTOS

Consider your pose.  Grab a friend for the afternoon and start practising, take a 100 + pics and see which pose highlights you the best and that will be your signature pose. Of course, you will want to alter it and play with variations on it, but it’s good to have that one pose that you know you’ll always look great doing.  We all have a “better side”, a better angle, this is your time to find it.  The other benefit to taking lots of photos is that you’ll get comfortable in front of the camera and over time, it will become easier to take outfit pics.

Don’t just stand there. Loosen up a little. Unless you are going for a super stylized shot or you are a professional model (they actually train for hours to learn how to pose), try to be natural in your shots. Don’t be afraid to twirl around if you are wearing a skirt or dress (you are trying to show off the outfit after all). Sit, stand or even jump. You never know when the greatest shot will be taken. Time and time again I’m surprised to find that my best photographs happen when I’m not posing for them. If I’m trying to pose, it usually winds up looking forced and fake. Most of all, don’t be afraid to look goofy.

Smile. My hat goes off to bloggers who regularly show themselves off on their blogs. It’s stressful and a very intimate experience. So why make it so serious? The best thing you can do is smile at the camera, as it invites people in and your face just lights up. A joyous smiling person will always look better than a serious uninviting one. Unless you are a pro or going for a specific look, try smiling.

Show your personality. What it really comes down to is that you want to have unique photos that will make your readers keep coming back for more. Don’t be afraid to let your personality shine. You can easily do this by using props. Animals are always a nice touch or maybe you love flowers, so why not hold a bouquet or a single stem? Your dedicated readers want to know you and this is one way of letting them in.

Find your angle. The general rule is that when you are shooting from below, your subject looks larger than life and when shooting from above they suddenly become smaller. A lot of people will only shoot from above, but it’s important to play with your angles. See what happens if you a get some distance from the camera and pay attention to your proportions.

Love the details. I’ve mentioned this before, but I just can’t help saying it again. Attention spans are short and no one wants to scroll through 10-15 pics of you standing around in the same outfit. Pick the best photograph, as in 1 or 2 and then focus in on the amazing details that make up your outfit. Are you wearing some really great jewelry, or perhaps you are carrying a new bag, or maybe you are wearing the most fabulous shoes? Show off those accessories, as they make the outfit! Remember that your blog is there not only to display a great outfit, but to teach your readers something new. If you are a master at accessorizing or putting together interesting colours and patterns then that’s what your readers want to see. On that note, why not change up your outfit in one of the shots? If you are wearing a hat or a jacket, remove it for one of the pics. It’s always interesting to see how you can change up an outfit.

Consider the location. Sure, we are all curious to see your office or bedroom, but make sure that it’s what you really want us to see… Look for an interesting place to shoot. This could be a bright wall that compliments your outfit or a neutral space that makes it stand out. Sitting on a rock by a pond in a flowing dress can look whimsical, a field flooded in light will be ethereal, while a graffiti filled wall can make an outfit look more edgy. All of these details will help create signature shots that compliment your aesthetic.

Get to know your camera. This is especially important if you are taking your own photographs.Take some time to learn your camera. You want to know how wide and high your shot will be (pay attention to what you see through the view finder). Then, mark the spot where you will stand so that you don’t cut yourself off at a strange angle.

Use a tripod. This really is an indispensable tool that also makes it possible for you to take pictures without the help of a trusted friend. You’ll have to spend some time playing around with it, but this way you’ll be the master of your own shots.

Remember, taking really great outfit shots is hard, know that it takes time especially if you don’t do them very often. Photography is an art form, as is modelling, but they are both pursuits you can learn and perfect. The key is to take lots and lots and lots (and maybe a few more) photographs and over time, you’ll see your style and personality starting to shine through!
