Photography For Bloggers Phone Photos

Photography for bloggers phone photos. Let’s get one thing straight, I love, love, love my DSLR, but it’s not always handy and I don’t always feel like taking it with me when I go places. Fortunately, that’s usually okay because I’ve discovered just how amazing my phone really is for taking photographs. In fact, I don’t even want to really admit just how many photos on this blog are taken with my phone. For the record, every single photo in this post was taken with my phone and with minimal alterations. Most of them have been cropped and all of them have been lightened with a heightened contrast.

PHOTOGRAPHY FOR BLOGGERS PHONE PHOTOS

Get close. This is what your phone was designed for and those little cameras are more powerful than we give them credit. Get up close and personal with your subject, opt for more artistic shots or product shots for the best and most striking images.

Ignore the zoom. Honestly, I’m not even sure why phones bother to have a zoom feature (I would take a longer lasting battery any day, but that’s not the issue here). Let’s face it, for a great long shot you just shouldn’t be using your phone. If you try to zoom, it’s likely that you’ll get a blurry, pixelated photo. Instead, crop your image and the details will still be apparent, giving you a much higher quality picture.

Use a photo editor. Whether you simply use the editor your phone comes with or download a different one, use it. Just like I rely on the brightness and contrast features when I’m editing my regular photos, they are indispensable tools when editing phone pictures. Keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be a drastic change, but making a photo a little bit brighter really does go a long way. If there is just no saving your photo but you still want to post it on your blog (but only if it’s a really great pic) then try for a black and white filter. Also, if you’re editing a picture for Instagram, then your phone screen is great. Before putting a picture on your blog, however, make sure that you review it on a good quality computer screen. Colour adjusting on a poor screen will ruin the photo.

Clean the lens. I know this should seems kind of obvious but really it’s not. Your camera has an official protective lens cover, but your phone doesn’t. Think about it, that phone gets tossed in your purse, left on the coffee table, it lies around on your desk and who knows what else? Naturally, the lens picks up dust and dirt so make it a habit to clean it before you snap a pic because no Instagram filter will hide dirt.

Play with light. That poor little flash on your phone isn’t exactly ideal and can’t really play with the big boys. Use it if you have to, but don’t count on it. It’s really best to either take pictures during the day or look for a different light source.

I used to be a huge camera snob, but then I met a lady, a photographer and coincidentally the wife of a fairly famous musician who used to take most of her pictures with a point and shoot. She made a huge impression on me and it was then that I realized that, as much as I think that everyone who loves taking pictures should have a decent camera (note, I’m not saying it has to be super expensive), a good photograph is a good photograph no matter how it was taken.

How often do you take your blog photos with your phone?

These are great tips – especially the photo app one!

Had to learn it the painful way, when I just got my new smartphone…so it’s one of the greatest advises in my opinion.
