Cloche hat. I received an unexpected and unplanned Christmas present this past Monday when I went to visit one of my favourite stores, Edie Hats. I had dragged my husband out to Granville Island which is a little piece of land in Vancouver that’s dedicated to an amazing farmer’s market and enough artist studio’s in which to happily lose yourself for days. We wandered around a bit and then headed for the hat store where I had the pleasure of meeting Kelly D. owner of The Saucy Milliner.
She’s a striking personage with a very distinct vintage-y style, someone who is your best friend from the moment you meet her. It’s obvious that Kelly loves her art because I got the rare opportunity to hear all about the vintage hat blocks that she uses for her creations. I have many hats that I love, lots of them are mass produced but there is something so special about these hand made creations. Also, having a cloche hat made on a block from the 20’s or 40’s is just so cool!
I was busy having a wonderful time trying on every single hat when my lovely husband turned to me and said, “Do you want one?”. I was so surprised and excited that my jaw dropped open and a huge grin appeared on my face. Are you kidding?! Do I want one? YES, of course I want one!
This is the beautiful cloche hat that came home with me. It’s called Boardwalk, which is pretty great since at the moment I’m loving Boardwalk Empire and all the amazing costumes! Another fantastic detail is that the felt used on this cloche has been discontinued.ย The Saucy Milliner only made two hats in this particular shade and I have one of them!
There are so many intricate details to millinery work and frankly I can’t remember everything we spoke about so I’ve invited myself to Kelly’s atelier and will report back soon. Stay tuned for more about the art of creating a unique hat!
Do you own a cloche hat, do you love it?
