Cupcakes On The Side

Cupcakes sign

Cupcakes. While taking a walk yesterday, we were pleasantly surprised to find that a new cupcake place had opened up in our neighbourhood. Then we saw the sign: Mancakes. We stopped dead in our tracks, this was something to be further investigated. What we found was both too funny and too great not to share with everyone. Upon entry we noticed the decor. The space is a man cave! It  looks like a polished garage, complete with a tool chest. Kind of a fantastic look and definitely not girly.

It was, however, the cupcakes that caught our eye. While there are some fairly traditional flavours like chocolate and vanilla you can also find ingredients such as brie and bacon. Even the cupcake names are great: Pink Peppercorn Grapefruit, Whiskey Lime and Bacon Chili Chocolate to name a few. There’s King Kong, a chocolate cupcake with banana cream, marshmallow and chocolate shavings which sounds absolutely heavenly. Or Chocolate Red Wine, a chocolate base filled with mascarpone mousse and red wine gelée, topped with vanilla buttercream and a dark chocolate disk. Mmmmm…  Both of them are on my list for next time. We were given a sample of Apple Brie. This one was definitely not a traditional cupcake. The ingredients:  spice base filled with a sweet apple cider jelly, topped with a brie buttercream and crushed pretzel brittle. Normally I would be very apprehensive but I have to admit that it was simply delicious. Also, these cupcakes are not super sweet which very  is nice. You can savour them and avoid getting that sugar high.

We went home with two cupcakes, Buffalo Wings (spice base filled with tangy baked blue cheesecake mousse, topped with a hot sauce buttercream and crispy chicken sprinkles) and Rum and Coke (vanilla base filled with strong cola cream, topped with rum buttercream). Just as pretty as the traditional pink sprinkle cupcakes, they are equally delicious, but with a twist.
