How to adapt your style as you age. I’ve found that one of the hardest things as I’ve gotten older is changing and adapting my style. I still have my chainmail mini skirt folded on a shelf somewhere. It’s not just about wearing appropriate or inappropriate clothing though, it’s also about how our bodies change. We might gain weight or stay the same, but either way our proportions change, our skin loses some of its elasticity and pieces that once enhanced our best assets don’t look the same anymore.
On top of all that our lifestyles changes, our interests change and maybe our tastes change as well. Realistically, I’m never going to wear a chainmail skirt ever again.
HOW TO ADAPT YOUR STYLE AS YOU AGE
Don’t Panic. More than once I’ve been tempted to throw out everything I own. While I have come close, I’m happy I never followed through with it because I probably would have replaced my clothing with stuff that I didn’t really like or that didn’t fit.
First, be honest with yourself. You know when it’s time for a change, even if you are still living in denial. This is the hardest part and I feel you 100%.
Take It One Step At A Time. I absolutely believe that there are people who can completely transform themselves in the blink of an eye, but for most of us, it’s best to do it one step at a time. Maybe you’ve always wanted to wear a biker jacket or you’ve always wanted to do a dramatic colour with your hair. Pick one thing to change and live with it for a while. You’ll absolutely know whether or not that change is for you. Although I don’t really believe in fashion rules, there are some basic things to keep in mind, EASY RULES TO LOOKING YOUR BEST
Use A Scientific Approach. When it comes to fashion and all the pretty colours and fabrics, it’s very easy to let our emotions get in the way and while we absolutely want to draw on them, the first part of this is strictly business.
- If you are unsure, let’s determine your body type which you can do here: HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR BODY SHAPE. Once you’ve done that, you are going to focus purchasing the pieces that highlight your assets the best.
- While I believe that there are no rules that you need to follow except the ones that make you happy, there are certain things you can do when you feel yourself falling into that frumpy-I-hate-everything-I-own trap. HOW TO LOOK LESS FRUMPY
- Now you need to leave your emotions at the door and take a good look at everything in your closet. Pick a day when you feel okay trying stuff on. Some pieces will be easy to throw out, like the jeans that haven’t fit in years. Some you’ll keep to wear ONLY around the house and others can probably be tailored to fit you better. Celebrate Your Old Style. Just because you are getting older doesn’t mean you can’t still love specific styles or colours. If pink is your passion, for instance, there is zero reason to give it up. All you might want to do is refine the cut of the item. I might not have my cheap biker jacket anymore, but you can absolutely be sure that my go to fall jacket is edgy, black and leather.
Celebrate Change. Have fun picking accessories and clothing that show off where you are in life. Personally, I love that there are stores that I no longer have to shop in because I can now justify better quality pieces. This is the time in your life when you should be celebrating everything you have accomplished and everything that’s yet to come.
Even if you wind up wearing a t-shirt and jeans because it fits your lifestyle at the moment don’t forget that you still deserve to feel beautiful. If that means wearing a special piece of jewelry or swiping on a bright lipstick then so be it. There’s no magic to transitioning your wardrobe and I agree that it can be tough, but please don’t let it stop you from feeling your best. Just in case you need some prompts in that department, please read, HOW TO FEEL BEAUTIFUL.
We can’t avoid getting older, as much as we might try, but we can do it in style!
