How to always have the best hair day. I think hair is super important. On those days when I don’t feel like putting on makeup I still always try to make sure that my hair looks good.
Sure, it might sound vain but hair is important. I’m not kidding, there have been studies done on the topic. Think about it, going to your stylist is a whole feel good event. I’ve had several stylists recently and every appointment was an enjoyable experience and they always want me to leave looking my very best. What could be better than that?
I’ve put together an ultimate guide on how to always have the best hair day. If you have any questions leave a comment below and I’ll be happy to tackle the subject in an upcoming post.
HOW TO ALWAYS HAVE THE BEST HAIR DAY
BEST COLOUR FOR YOUR SKIN TONE
Best colour for your skin tone. Whether it was always your dream to be a fiery red head, a sultry brunette or a fun-loving blonde, there is a shade that is just right for you. The beauty is that because there are so many different shades of each colour, you will always find the ideal tone.
The first step is to figure out if you have a cool, a warm or a neutral skin tone. Once you have done this, it will be much easier to pick the shade that suits you best.

BEST CUTS FOR WHEN YOU HAVE NO TIME
If my hair was bone straight, I’d probably opt for an edgy cut, but as it stands my hair has a mind of its own. To be fair, I have the time to play with my hair, but I just can’t be bothered and besides, my favourite (for now) look is that, “oh I just woke up this way” one.
So what do you do if you don’t have time to spend hours on your hair everyday? The only way for this to work is for you to embrace your hair and its texture. While that can be tough, especially if you have straight hair and always wanted curls, it’s actually important to remember that what your hair does is totally dependent on the cut.
I had a long standing argument with a friend of mine who was absolutely convinced that her hair was flat and lifeless, so she wore it long and it was always up in a bun. After many months, I finally wore her down and she went to get it cut. She was shocked that her hair actually has a ton of wave and even some curls.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU HATE YOUR CUT
HATE YOUR BANGS
- Sweep them all to one side and (at first), use a hair pin to secure them
- Pull them back and rock a hide hair band until they’ve grown out
- Part your hair in the middle
HATE YOUR LAYERS/SHAPE
- If you have straight hair, grab a curling iron and a volumizing mousse to blur the layers.
- If you have wavy hair, simply grab a texturizing spray for the illusion of more movement.
- If all else fails, start playing with hair accessories or tie your hair back into a messy bun.
BEST HAIRCUTS FOR YOUR 40s
For many years, I wore my hair long and all one length. I never really did much with it, but somehow it didn’t matter and I could get away with it. Then one day, several years ago, I decided to cut it. There was very little preparation on my part, I walked down to my stylist’s salon, plopped myself in his chair and told him I wanted it cut. That’s when the epiphany happened and I realized how much fun a shorter hair cut can be. For one, I could actually wear it down. I stopped spending hours washing and drying it and I could start experimenting with colour, (yes I went pink for a while). The best part was that I had suddenly reinvented myself. I felt freer than I had in a long time and there was a spring in my step. I must have looked happier because, as I left the salon, I received a spontaneous marriage proposal from some random guy on the street (true story).
When I look around, there are lots of women with really great hair, but there seem to be so many more with drab, no-style styles or those that insist on wearing their hair up, every single day. It seems like most women in that category fall into their late 30s to 40s. It’s as if this is the age where we lose our direction.
What you’ll find:
- Hairstyle do’s
- Lots of cut idea

BEST HAIRCUTS FOR FINE HAIR
THE OVERALL
- Aim for blunt cuts or soft choppy ends as they will create texture and the illusion of thicker hair
- Stack it by wearing a deep part or an asymmetrical cut (longer in the front and shorter in the back)
- Let it frame your face (that is what you are showing off after all)
- Heavy fringe, again this will create the illusion of more hair
- Darker roots will give the illusion of denser locks and fullness
- Blowouts will give added movement and volume
SHORT CUT
- A short, choppy bob is always going to work for fine hair. It will create volume and texture and movement.
- Create more height, aka volume, by asking for layers throughout the crown.
- Any style that’s a little messy and edgy will give you the required texture to make it appear as if you have a full head of thick hair.
- A bold or out of the box colour will add more drama and texture to a short cut and will mask fine hair.
MEDIUM
- There’s no reason not to have a medium length cut, you just need to pay attention to how the ends look.
- If your cut is too choppy, the ends will look wispy and that will make your hair look even thinner (plus, you don’t want to remove too much hair). Aim for less layers or even a blunt cut, but keep some around your face.
- Create even more volume by wearing your hair in loose waves that frame your face and don’t worry about them being too perfect. In fact, leave the ends undone for a loose, relaxed feel.
LONG
- Fine hair that’s long and healthy can look fantastic, but the same rules apply as they would for a shorter cut.
- Create the illusion of depth by showing off an ombre look (dark roots equal more volume).
- Try sleeping in braids or simply using a curling iron to create more movement and fullness. Pay particular attention to face framing layers which will highlight your face and give your hair more body.
- If you don’t want curls and waves, you can still wear your hair straight and smooth. Simply add low lights which will help create a more 3-dimensional look (it’s about keeping the ends from looking too wispy)
