How To Deal With Gaining Weight. Sometimes I feel like my body is out to get me. One day I have energy and I feel great and the next day I’m fat and nothing fits. The truth is that recently I have gained quite a bit of weight. It sort of crept up on me. I knew I had gained a bit but, not nearly as little as I thought. Sure, my clothing still fits, but I can see the difference in photos. The feeling is terrible.
What really sucks is that this isn’t the first time it has happened, even though I vowed the last time would be the last. Stress, my thyroid issues and some mild depression all play a factor. I think I have it all under control until suddenly, bam, I’m 20 lbs heavier without even realizing it.
Of course my reaction is to go into panic mode and want to eat nothing and start working out 10 hours a day even though I know that is not realistic, unhealthy and totally crazy.
HOW TO DEAL WITH GAINING WEIGHT
Stop making it a dirty little secret. It’s very tempting to start hiding when you’ve gained weight, but why? Our society has attached such a strong stigma to weight that unless we are skinny, we are embarrassed and apologetic about it. Notice how the word healthy doesn’t come into this equation. Getting to a healthy weight is so much more important than getting skinny. There’s also a big difference between saying, ‘I’ve gained a few pounds’ and being self-deprecating. That you are not allowed to do.
Put Together A Plan. If you are anything like me, your first instinct will be to start starving yourself or over-exercising. We all know this isn’t going to work and you’ll probably wind up gaining more weight over time. Now that you’ve acknowledged that you’ve gained the weight sit down and put together a sensible plan of attack.
Understand The Cause. Your best defense is always going to be education and when it comes to your body it’s no different. It’s much easier to nip the start of weight gain early than it is when your pants don’t fit. If you are like me and losing weight is extremely slow and difficult (thank you thyroid) then this is especially important. Write down your triggers, what makes you exercise less and eat more, when do you find yourself packing on the extra pounds? Hopefully the next time it happens you’ll be able to catch the weight gain earlier.
Be Present. Before you jump on the next diet bandwagon or start spending hours at your local gym, start being more mindful with your days. The first thing you are going to need to do is change your habits and that is going take a while. There’s no need to rush into anything because the goal is to make these new behaviours last as long as possible. First, you are going to take an honest view of what you are eating and start having smaller portions. You are also going to stop mindlessly grabbing snacks. Have a glass of water if you are feeling peckish and wait a few minutes, if you are truly hungry then have a vegetable or a piece of fruit.
Next, if you are already working out then great, just add a few extra minutes or up the intensity. If you haven’t been moving then start. Get up and walk for at least 20 minutes after every meal or you can try an at home workout that I designed: YOUR AT HOME WORKOUT.
Enjoy Your Life. Look, it’s pretty simple. You can either hide and be miserable or you can get out and live your life and pursue your dreams. Let’s be honest, no one really cares that much about how much you weigh, so go get a haircut a massage a mani or pedi (choose one or choose them all) and then put on your favourite outfit and go out. If your favourite outfit doesn’t quite fit, well then maybe it’s time to buy something that does. There’s absolutely no excuse to be walking around in ill-fitting clothes, since that will only highlight how badly you feel.
