How to stay true to your style as you age. Getting older is hard. There are so many things that we have to contend with and seeing wrinkles and experiencing changes with your body doesn’t make it any easier.
Between trying to still look young but not so young that you look cheap and like you are trying too hard, the whole process can get really confusing. On the one hand you are doing everything you can not to look frumpy but those pieces that you liked when you were 20 probably aren’t appropriate anymore.
Not to mention, as you age, your body shape naturally changes and suddenly some of the pieces you used to love, don’t quite fit as well anymore. At the same time, you don’t necessarily want to completely loose the style that took you so long to curate. You still want to feel like you, only better.
HOW TO STAY TRUE TO YOUR STYLE AS YOU AGE
Implement changes slowly. It might be tempting to change everything at once but don’t. It will take some time to get to know the new you and you want to do yourself justice. Think about your staples and make just one change at a time. For example, if you usually wear jeans and a t-shirt, keep the jeans and add a blouse or a fitted jacket. Then when you are ready, you can change the style of your denim. See where I’m going with this? Over time you’ll update your wardrobe without any shock to your system.
Buy some basics. Chances are that this is what you are really lacking in your closet. Every woman should have one tailored blazer and a great skirt or pair of slacks. You may not wear them very often but when you need them they will be there. They could be the difference between feeling event appropriate and very uncomfortable.
Make it your own. Updating your wardrobe doesn’t mean that you need to suddenly loose all your personal style. You might have loved wearing trippy scarves and torn denim. Now you can take that same scarf and tie in around the handle of your bag. Maybe you were obsessed with heavy metal. Simply find some great spiky silver jewelry. Instead of making the whole outfit about your passion, just sneak a little bit of it in.
Remember, opposites attract. Instead of trying to be matchy-matchy, play with opposing style.
- A flirty floral dress always looks great with a structured blazer.
- Masculine trousers work great with a pussy bow blouse.
- Loafers or sneakers paired with a skirt are a stylish option.
- A blinged-out statement necklace will be a nice touch to a men’s sweater.
