Is it okay to wear nude tights. So I have a love hate relationship with nude tights. Generally, I hate them. I feel like they should only be worn by my grandmother and anyone who has to wear them due to a very strict corporate job. There, I said it. My apologies for a bit of a rant here, but I see women wearing them all the time and while I understand that nude tights can be convenient, they usually just look kind of frumpy. When I started reading up on the topic earlier this week, there were so many more opinions on the web than I could ever possibly imagine. So I’ve been taking a closer look at them and I’ve come to a few conclusions of my own.
IS IT OKAY TO WEAR NUDE TIGHTS
Why do we wear them? Nude tights, in theory, actually make a lot of sense. They are a great transition piece when you are done with your black opaque winter tights, but not quite ready for bare summer legs. They are an alternative to getting your legs airbrushed on a daily basis since they’ll hide a multitude of imperfections. In practice, however, they are a whole different story.
What to look for in nude tights? The biggest issue with nude tights is that people choose the wrong colour and texture. A nude tight must be sheer and barely visible to the naked eye (okay, well visible only if you are paying very, very close attention to someone’s legs). Any strange textures or off colours will just make you look frumpy and the goal is to always look polished. My preference would be a super sheer, slightly matte finish as any shine will be unnatural and slightly odd.
How to wear them? Alright, so if you absolutely must wear nude tights then at least wear them sparingly. Stay away from sandals and open toed shoes because they will show. I’m not a fan of seeing them worn with flats, so I’ll say stick to a pair of heels. Wedges are also fine, but absolutely no runners (which, for all sense and purpose, are flats). If it really is freezing outside and you have to have some extra padding under your jeans then look for a pair of footless tights, otherwise suck it up. If you are wearing jeans and flats or heels then barefoot is the only way to go. I’ll grudgingly accept nude tights with a suit or a knee-ish length skirt. If you are wearing a long dress then go bare, but if you are opting for a mini then I vote for black hose for a long, lean look.
An alternative. Now, I really do understand that some of you may be looking at your legs and screaming that there’s absolutely no way you are going to go outside with your legs looking the way they look. Hey, I get that. My legs are incredibly pale at the moment and definitely not as flawless as I’d like them to be. Of course, you can always opt for a hint of colour from a self tanner, but if you are like me then you probably find that most don’t work with your skin tone. My secret weapon is makeup. I’ve been using Guerlain Terracotta Skin Healthy Glow Foundation for a few years now, as it gives me subtle colour and blurs out any imperfections. Best of all, it doesn’t come off until I wash it off, even in the hottest summer months.
A few years ago, I would never have dreamed of owning a pair of nude tights, but now I might have one pair. So while I’m still not a convert, I do accept that nude tights might have to have a place in our lives on occasion, just make sure that you opt for quality and choose your colour wisely.
