Whisky. To keep with my story theme and this being Friday night, I’m pulling out a beautiful bottle of Polish rye malt vodka/whisky. While we were looking to bring something back with us from Warsaw Poland, this bottle caught my eye. It has a beautiful design, I’m always a sucker for that, it’s quite unique and not available in Vancouver Canada.
According to the back of the bottle, the very name, Starkus, has an interesting history as it is the Old Lithuanian word for stork. It is named in remembrance for when Poland and Lithuania were united from the 16th to the 18th century.
Why call it Stork? The reason for the name is from an old tradition. They used to distill alcohol and place it in barrels when a child was born. Then, when the child grew up and got married the oak aged vodka/whisky was brought out for the celebration.
This is very special for me because my father pulled out a bottle of alcohol that he had been saving for when I got married. It really was a wonderful moment with my family that I will never forget!
Do you love whisky?

That is a lovely design! I don’t think I’ve ever had rye vodka. I’m curious – does the stork have any association with pregnancy in Polish culture? I think it’s interesting… there would probably be an uproar if an American distillery used the image of a stork on any kind of liquor packaging.
Oh yeah, it’s the exact same as here….storks bring the babies! The cool thing is that just outside of the big cities there are stork nests everywhere. Ha! There’s always someone waiting to start an uproar…. You know I was thinking about the story and didn’t even think of it that way.
Well, if the stork brings babies… I guess we never have to worry about alcohol consumption. Win/win!!
What a lovely story, Thank you do sharing it with us 🙂
*for* sharing…. Silly autocorrect, lol
What an incredible looking shop and incredible design on the bottle you selected too! Love it!
What an awesome story. My father could never ever have kept a bottle of vodka for 30 years 🙂 It would jave been gone.

look at all those bottles (read booze) just in time for the weekend! The design of the bottle is amazing! Great post Caroline! xxx
We loved the vodka bars in Krakow – 100s of different flavours! We bought some rasberry and some plain vodka back – it’s so much more drinkable than the normal Smirnoff or whatever.
Lovely story!

Interesting story about how the Stork label came to be! It’s not often that you hear of someone saving a bottle ~ as your father did:) My brother is a wine maker. They year that both my children were born, he made a case of port. We opened a bottle on each of their 21 birthdays. It’s a nice tradition:)
Coming over from Jeannie’s:) Nice to meet you!

This sounds weird, but I love alcohol containers, boxes or bottles, because they are so pretty! I have a beautiful wooden whiskey crate as a storage container and decoration in my room and I love it!
