Staying fit when it is cold outside. In a few short weeks your inbox will be flooded with articles about how to stay healthy during the holidays. I think, however, that by now we all know that we should focus on eating well and inserting movement/exercise whenever we can. If you need some tips in this department take a look at the articles I’ve written.

TIPS ON STAYING HEALTHY DURING THE HOLIDAYS
What I’m more concerned about is how to stay fit during those in between times when the weather is awful and all I want to do is curl up under the blankets and basically ignore the world until spring time.
STAYING FIT WHEN IT IS COLD OUTSIDE
Get dressed. I know that this doesn’t seem too difficult but it’s going to be the first step in your motivation battle. If you are wearing your workout gear the chances of skipping your sweat session are going to be slim.
Avoid cotton. For everyday wear I’m all about a nice cotton t-shirt but not so much for a good sweat session. The problem with cotton is that it doesn’t wick away moisture, so when you start to sweat you’ll get cold. Dressing warm is important when the temperatures drop but it’s also important to dress dry.
Make it enjoyable. If you hate your workout what are the chances that you are actually going to do it? Probably zero to none. Give yourself some variety by exploring different activities that you’ve always wanted to try.
Layer. While you are reaching for high-tech moisture wicking clothing make sure that you are also layering. Fall weather is fickle, one minute it’s hot and the next a freezing wind comes out of nowhere. Be prepared for any and all weather.
Join a group. I’m mostly a solo exerciser but during those times when I really don’t feel like going, a group always keeps me accountable. Alternatively, you can also just tell a friend or partner that you are going for a workout and then let them know how it went.
Keep your extremities warm. Frozen fingers and toes are the absolute worst and they’ll impede your workout.
Eat healthy. Again, you’ll have to make a conscious effort to cut out processed and fast foods but it’s well worth it. Once you are eating healthy, you’ll find that your mood lifts and you’ll be more likely to continue working out.
Face the wind. If it’s a particularly windy day and you are going outside for a run, start by running toward the wind. This will help you warm up faster because you’ll be working harder and since you are at the beginning of your workout you won’t have started to sweat.
