Street art and graffiti.Today I had the opportunity to spend several hours re-discovering the Vancouver Art Gallery with my new friend who writes the blog, Yes Missy. We connected online a few weeks ago when she mentioned that she was moving across the country and wanted to check some items off her Vancouver bucket list before leaving. Since it’s raining today, it was the perfect day to go!
I walk by this place almost every single day and, as is fairly typical of many of us, I rarely go in. To be perfectly honest, I’ve only been there once before. Lately I’ve been trying to make a big effort to re-discover my city. When I step outside my door, I’ve been trying to really pay attention to what’s around me and to see my surroundings.
There is so much design and art everywhere. Although we were very tempted, there were too many cameras and security guards to risk taking pictures inside. Much of the gallery was closed unfortunately, but the Art Spiegelman exhibit was fantastic. Since he is a cartoonist it made me think of the contemporary art that surrounds us all everyday. Walking home I realized that you don’t need to actually go to an art gallery to see art.
Of course it is an experience that everyone needs to have but let me present you with the following activity; on a sunny day, grab a coffee and your camera and start wandering around your city. I love doing this and the photographs you are looking at are from both Vancouver and Warsaw. Look down alleys and on the sides of buildings. There is a ton of beautiful street art and graffiti everywhere and much of it is done by respected local artists. Pay attention to the various techniques, the colours they use and the subject matters. There you have it, a free art gallery right at your doorstep!
Do you enjoy discovering amazing street art and graffiti in your city?

Thanks for sharing. I was born and raised in San Francisco, where the American mural movement got its spark in the ’60’s. They sort of sprouted up around us while we were growing up.

Hey, nice idea and fabulous way to spend the day. I am with you….sometimes in our own cities we need to behave like tourists once in a while. We forget what we have! Thanks for sharing. Oh and love the graffiti.

Yeap, I am a huge street art fan too. In Athens – Greece you can see some really great stuff in urban walls.
