What To Wear On A Plane To Europe

what to wear on a plane to europe

What to wear on a plane to Europe. If I had it my way I would spend my life traveling. There’s nothing better than discovering a new city, a new culture and new friends. Unfortunately, for many reasons, I haven’t been able to do as much traveling in the past few years as I would have liked. So when the opportunity arose to travel for a quick trip to Europe, my hubby and I jumped on the chance.

Here’s where I need some advice. I have no idea what I should wear on the plane as I will have to pack mostly winter clothing. Right now I would say that Spring has arrived in Vancouver. Flowers are starting to bloom with crocuses and daffodils on every street corner. I just checked the weather forecast and Warsaw Poland is going to be COLD. We’re talking snow falls and negative temperatures…. what is that all about? My spoiled body isn’t used to that kind of weather anymore as we rarely travel anywhere cold in the winter. This is going to be painful.

So here’s how flight day is going to pan out. We leave at about 7 am in the morning and drive across the border, 3 hours south to Seattle. Not optimal but we’re saving about $1200.00 doing it this way. I know, ridiculous right? The flight takes us direct to Amsterdam where we have a 1.5 hour layover and then it’s onto another plane direct to Warsaw. The whole journey (including the drive) will take about 17 hours so I really need to be comfortable. I like flying in converse because they are soft and I can easily get through security checks in them. I’ll pack a nice long coat which will be perfect for business meetings and going out in the evenings. For day I’m thinking my jacket with the vest (hat and gloves) will be perfect. Not sure if I should wear the vest on the plane though? Maybe too much? Or a large toasty wrap might be better since it can double as a blanket. Any thoughts on this?

My Marc Jacobs tote was a great purchase and it is a lifesaver. It’s really big and will fit my camera, iPad and everything else that I might need. I’ve learned, through experience, to always pack an extra t-shirt, you never know when you might need it.

So for all of you who frequently travel, or those who, like me, dream of being a frequent traveler, any advice would be much appreciated!

What to wear on a plane to Europe? Simple and comfortable attire is the best!

  17. I think you are right on track for the entire trip! Have you considered flying in a full-length skirt or dress? For me, as long as I don’t have any significant walking to do in super cold weather, that’s the most comfortable option for a super long flight. Something jersey, usually – it won’t wrinkle or crinkle and you can dress it up or down with a different kind of jacket and/or scarf if you don’t have time to change before going out when you arrive.

  18. borsadimarypoppins

    very very nice my dear:)

  19. To keep your face hydrated on long plane rides, I keep a travel sized bottle of Caudalie’s Eau de Beautรฉ (Beauty Elixir) in my liquids bag. Not only does it keep skin hydrated, it wakes you up and soothes sore, jet-lagged eyes! Have an amazing time!

    1. Oh I use that and love it!

  20. We have the same camera ๐Ÿ˜‰
    Enjoy your trip my dear!
    Lots of love, Lima xoxo

  21. Hope Howland (@HHDesigns)

Scarf that can do double duty, sunglasses to help hide the circles under the eyes from a long flight (a tinted moisturizer will save your life)… I would find a way to maybe pack your camera in your vest so that it can fit in your bag and then you’ll have your vest when you arrive in Poland… or just pack it on top of everything else in the suitcase so it’s the first thing on top when you open the bag in the airport before you leave. I wouldn’t do sneakers the take too long to lace up and your feet will get wet easily in any snow.. I would go with a boot, yes a pain in security but your feet will be warm and dry…
    Hope

  22. You better pack a scarf and some warm clothes just in case. Temperatures arenยดt stable enough to have outfits for one season. This morning we had -12C in Norway. See that you are heading for Poland, so I am thinking temperatures will vary there too. Safe travels. xoxo KJ

  23. vintagefrenchchic

I say skip the vest and pack the wrap. I never thought about wearing Converse for flying…they would be comfortable and easy to get through security. Before I read your post today, I had just read this one that you may find interesting for future reference: http://www.annieandre.com/2013/03/ultimate-budget-travel-guide-travel-the-world-on-a-tight-budget/

    Have a great trip!!

  24. How exciting! Doesn’t the airline usually give blankets on international flights? Either way, I think it never hurts to wear extra layers just in case. You can always take them off if you get too hot.
    Have fun in Warsaw!

  25. i always wear as much as i can in the airplane so that my luggage is lighter and it saves some room for future purchases ๐Ÿ˜‰

  26. enjoy the trip! i am sure by now you have reach your destination, i see that you have packed the essential to keep you warm as well as your moisturizer to rehydrate the skin.

Love the vest, jacket and scarf. I think they are all versitile and cozy! I always bring a scarf on the plane with me, doubles as a blanket like you said. Enjoy your travels! ๐Ÿ™‚

    2. The fur on leather. More amazing

    1. Wow thanks, I really appreciate that!

  32. Bring clothes you can layer to stay warm! Trust me on that one:) I love your travel outfit it looks comfy, especially for a long travel day. I always pack a pair of cotton knit ( good quality ) leggings, I find them comfortable to travel in and you can wear them with just about anything.
Have a great trip! Can’t wait to see the pictures.

  33. Melissa & Megan @goldonblack

I love your first outfit! Vest is not too much! I would layer, as you can always take things off! That travel to Seattle is painful! Canada is so expensive to travel out of. At least you don’t need to take the ferry! Hope you have a fabulous trip!

  34. lovely post, and i love the outfit! I can’t wait for the next post.
enjoy your vacation my dear! i love reading your blog

I travel quite a lot and always wear the same thing when I travel due to it being so comfortable. I always wear leggings, just so I can easily curl up in them (I find jeans uncomfy on planes), a tank top, and a big cardigan/wrap. For some reason planes always go from boiling hot before take off, then freezing in the air so I like to have something I can take off when it’s warm but something warm enough to cuddle up in if you’re trying to sleep. For shoes I just wear ballet flats/loafers cos they are easy to slip on and off, and I bring a pair of socks in my bag for when I’m sitting on the plane cos my feet get cold! Hope this helps a bit!

It’s so strange how taking a round-about way can be so much more affordable. So absurd.

  49. Elizabeth McKinnon

I feel the same about traveling… I love to travel oversees… Enjoy!

  50. eleanorjanebirdy

I’m in England and it’s been frickin’ freezing! I’m wearing boots, trousers (with wool tights underneath on really cold days), a wool singlet, long sleeved top, jumper (sweater), thick wool coat, scarf, gloves, hat if its really cold. I’ve been dressing like this for six months and I’m a bit sick of it.

So, to me your proposed wardrobe looks way too light for the temps in Poland. However, you might be tougher…

Anyway, have fun on your trip. We went to Krakow in Poland last year and loved it.

    1. You’re totally right it was freezing! I only traveled in that though. I wore warm winter clothes and a proper winter coat the whole time I was there.

  51. Oh it’s always hard to decide what to wear on the plane..especially when the temperature at your destination will be so diffrent from your starting point. I think you made some good choices!

The make-up bag is amazing! And much classier than the usual freezer bags…

    xx

    1. Thanks! I know, the last flight I was on the temperature was about 25 degrees colder at my destination than at my departure.
      xo
