Why your gym clothes matter. This is a topic I like to come back to every now and because I believe that our appearance is always important, even if we are sweating and blotchy and gasping for air.
Yeah, okay that was a bit of a dramatic image, but I’m sticking to it. I was at the gym earlier today. It’s in my building and usually I’m the only one there but I’ve been paying closer attention to what I wear.
WHY YOUR GYM CLOTHES MATTER
IMPROVED PERFORMANCE. For what it’s worth, your main reason for going to the gym should be to get fitter and healthier, so why not give yourself every opportunity to succeed?
- Shoes. If your shoes are worn and don’t fit properly your technique will suffer and your workout won’t be as effective. Wearing ill fitting shoes can throw you off your game. Consider the fact that golfers, soccer players, runners all wear very specific shoes which are tailored to their sport. There are absolutely better and worse shoes to choose from. The fashion aspect should come second while the fit, comfort and specific activity should come first.
- Well Fitting Clothes. Here’s the thing, if your clothing too baggy then you’ll find it harder to move. On that same note, if your clothing is too tight and you find yourself yanking and pulling on it, you won’t be able to make the most out of your workout. Ideally, your clothing needs to be working with you instead of against you.
- Technical Fabrics. These matter because they are moisture wicking, help control your body temperature and work with you during your sweat session. I think that we sometimes shy away from higher end fabrics because of cost, but in the end they will last longer as well as keep you safer during your workout.
CONFIDENCE & MOTIVATION. Just like you wouldn’t wear ripped jeans to a formal event, you shouldn’t wear your frumpiest outfit to the gym. When you don’t feel good about yourself not only will your performance suffer, but you’ll also be tempted not to go. We humans are masters of talking ourselves out of doing things, so wear something you are excited to put on.
